Eat yourself thin at Copenhagen Cooking

A lumpfish roe safari on an iron horse; midnight mussels; and Poetry Wednesday: going on a diet needn’t be dull this February as Copenhagen Cooking shines a spotlight on new Nordic food and the sea.

A lumpfish roe-safari and midnight mussels are just some of what’s on the programme when Scandinavia’s largest food festival, Copenhagen Cooking, heats up for its winter edition, with the focus on Nordic food and the bounty of the sea.

Which is great news for New Year dieters. Research shows that those who eat the New Nordic diet on a daily basis lose more than those on an average Danish diet. So, there is no reason to hold back from indulging in Copenhagen Cooking’s winter temptations.

Lumpfish safari and singed sheep’s head

The festival takes place throughout the whole of February, during Copenhagen’s new culture month, Wondercool, and among other things features a lumpfish roe safari through the city’s restaurants. During the safari, participants which cycle between four restaurants, all of which will serve their interpretation of Scandinavia’s ‘caviar’.

If you prefer everything to be under one roof, you can visit ten different restaurants all of which will be offering tastings in the Admiral Hotel; or if you fancy it you can sample singed sheep’s head and ram’s testicles at an Icelandic pagan festival. You can also listen Wednesday poetry while enjoying a Nordic menu at Gefährlich, or visit Amager Fiskehus for a free glass of something bubbly, some lumpfish roe and music.

Nyhavns Færgekro (Ferry Inn) opens its doors for the second year running for its magnificent herring recipe competition. You can enter a recipe or just come along to try the herring. If you like luxury beer and Nordic tapas, you’ll find the perfect combination at Bar Jacobsen, or if you are a night owl, Fiskebaren in Kødbyen (the Meat Packing district) offers midnight mussels from 12am-3am, along with sounds from DJ Lulu Rouge.

Chinese New Year and the new black

Not everything is Nordic-themed during the festival. You can, for example, let yourself be tempted by the winner of Dessert of the Year 2011, Nikolaos Strangas, or extend your New Year celebrations at LêLê, which is marking the Chinese New Year with a sumptuous 7-course menu, with plenty of surprises along the way.

You can also come along to the Liquorice Festival and sample everything from liquorice rolls to gourmet liquorice, or be tempted by Dining Week, where a number of restaurants will be offering 3-course menus for 200kr from 13-19 February.

And, those with a penchant for cocktails need not despair. Among other things, the Botanic Garden’s Palm House will be offering fruit cocktails, and there will be special cocktail events at popular bar, 1105, and Moltkes Bar.

You can find the entire festival programme at www.copenhagencooking.dk from early December.

Copenhagen Cooking, which is organised by Wonderful Copenhagen together with a number of leading figures in the city’s food scene, has been going since 2005 in its August incarnation. This winter edition is part of Wonderful Copenhagen’s umbrella festival, *Wondercool, which, along with food events, also encompasses fashion, design, art, architecture, rock and jazz.
